Abstract

1,134,739. Polymerization catalysts for butadiene. INTERNATIONAL SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO. Ltd. 12 Sept., 1967 [19 Sept., 1966], No. 41706/66. Heading C3P. A polymerization catalyst for butadiene comprises (a) an organic compound of nickel, (b) a Lewis acid or complex thereof, and (c) a boron hydride, e.g. diborane. Specific (a) compounds are nickel octoate, acetylacetonate, and di-isopropyl salicylate. Component (b) may be boron trifluoride etherate, or TiCl 4 . Polymerization is generally carried out in hexane, benzene, or toluene, and the boron hydrides added in an ether, e.g. tetrahydrofuran. Component (a) may be premixed with (b) in the presence of butadiene before addition of the boron hydride. The polybutadiene has a high cis-1,4-configuration.
