Abstract
1,135,544. Polyimides. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 22 March, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 13468/67. Heading C3R. A coating, fibre, foam or film-forming mixture comprises an organic solvent, a polyamide acid cyclizable to polyimide and an N-acyl azole compound having at least one 5-membered ring containing 2 to 4 N atoms and 2 double bonds. Of the azoles specified, imidazole is preferred. The azole compound and polyamideacid solution are admixed, usually at - 5‹ to 15‹ C., and the solution can then be extruded, spun, sprayed, blade coated or moulded, and the resulting article can be stored per se or heated to at least 75‹ C. to effect oyclization to the imide, the by-produced carboxylic acid being removed with the solvent. Fillers, abrasives, pigments &c. can be added prior to shaping. In a typical Example (1) N-acetyl imidazole was added at room temp. to a solution in N,N-dimethylacetamide of bis-(4-aminophenyl)-ether, polypyromellitamide-acid, and the resulting solution was cast into a film on a glass plate, dried at 120‹ C., stripped from the plate, and heated at 300‹ C. to yield a polyimide film.
