Abstract

1,135,496. Shielded containers for radioactive material. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 23 Nov., 1967 [29 Nov., 1966], No. 53299/66. Heading B4Q. A transport container comprises an inner lead vessel 1 having a lid 13 and enclosing an isotope containing bottle 8, the vessel being surrounded by an outer casing 2. The casing 2 is formed by two inter-engageable dome shaped shells 3, 4, each of sandwich construction in which outer and inner skins 5, 6 enclose a thermally insulating core 7. The skins 5, 6 are pressure moulded from a fire resistant polyester resin/ glass fibre mix and the core 7 is made of resin bonded wood flour; if required, the skins may be bonded to the core. In modifications long fibre asbestos and epoxy resin can be used for the skins and the core made of phenolic foam or vermiculite. The shells 3, 4 have a flange 14 whereby they may be held together by a circumferential band 15 to which handles 18 are pivoted.
