Abstract

1442918 Detecting cracks in tanks MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 21 June 1974 [22 June 1973] 27769/74 Heading F4P A cryogenic tank includes maens for detecting cracks therein which comprise a plurality of mutually spaced radio-active sources 5 located on the inside of the outer shell 1, and means, such as a dosimeter, for measuring the radioactivity of the sources. Each source, Fig. 4, includes a container comprising a lead casing 5a with a window 5b which hermetically encloses a capsule 5c containing a radio-isotope. The dosimeter would measure the radio-activity from inside the tank, a peak of intensity indicating a crack, and the degree of the peak intensity indicating whether the crack is in the intermediate wall 4 or inner wall 3. Materials.-Radioisotope-cobalt 60, Heat insulation 2a, 2b-hard polyurethane foam, polystyrene foam or polyethylene foam. Impermeable layers 3, 4-material sold under Registered Trade Mark "Alumimilar". This comprises aluminium foils laminated with polyester resin and a composite material having glass or carbon fibres combined with polyurethane resin, epoxy resin, silicone resin or polytetrafluoroethylene.
