An adsorption device comprises within a common outer casing adsorption units and heat exchanger units in series, separated by partitions which only serve to retain adsorbent in place, but which do not substantially alter the total internal cross-section over which the gas flows, which cross-section extends over the entire interface between the units. Successive adsorption units may be of different kinds and may be arranged' in groups each containing two or more units in series, such groups being separated by heat exchanger units, or alternatively adsorber and heat exchanger units may alternate in sequence. In Fig. 2, an adsorber (shown with the shell removed) has adsorption units 1 and cooling sections 2 comprising tubes 5 for the coolant. Gas passes up from 8 to 9. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the cooling section is restricted in cross-section by an obstacle 6 in the middle which may suitably be rounded or streamlined, so that gas flow through the cooling section is accelerated and becomes turbulent. Specified adsorbents are active carbon, silica gel, and molecular sieves.
