Abstract

113,479. Pillinger, G. C., and Sunderland, L. Feb. 21, 1917. Switching systems.-An emergency electric generating-set, for use in ships, buildings, &c., when the main supply fails, comprises a dynamoelectric machine A and associated internal-combustion engine B, the machine acting as a motor to start up the engine when the main supply fails. The starting-switch C is under the control of a switch D having a winding d<3> across the main supply leads G, G<1>, and a second winding opposing the first and across a battery, &c. When the switch D closes, the auxiliary set starts up; when it is running at full speed, a change-over switch E is actuated to connect the load to the auxiliary set. If the main supply voltage rises again to normal value, the switch D is opened and the auxiliary set stops. A time switch F is used to periodically start up the auxiliary set to ensure that it is in working order; a hand switch may also be used for this purpose. The switch D may have only one winding placed across the main supply.
