Abstract
174,800. Read, H. J., and Bransom, W. J. Nov. 23, 1920. Starting prime-movers, dynamo-electric machines and control circuits for; systems of charging and discharging galvanic batteries.-A supply system, comprising a battery with regulating end cells, an internal-combustion engine, and a twovoltage dynamo-electric machine or machines adapted to operate as a starting motor or motors or as a charging dynamo or dynamos, is provided with an end-cell regulating-switch having a rotary movement in one direction only and contacts adapted to control the starting and stopping of the engine. The rotary arm A, Fig. 1, of the cell-regulating switch is provided with contacts p, p<1>, one at each end of the arm, adapted to engage contacts m - - m<4> and with contacts s, s<1> adapted to engage contacts n, n<1>. In the position shown in Fig. 1, the battery q is discharging through the load circuit r and a movement of the arm A in a clockwise direction causes additional cells to be connected to the load circuit r. After the contact p has engaged the contact m, the contact s<1> bridges the contacts n, n<1> to energize the winding h of the switch g. The contact i engages contacts k, k<1> to connect the battery to the machines b, d, operating as motors, in series with a resistance l. After the engine a is started the voltage coil h<1> operates to short-circuit the resistance l. During the charging period the contact p<1> is in engagement with the contact m<4> whereby the load circuit r is connected across the dynamo b and the batterv is connected across the dynamos b, d. Further movement of the arm A causes the circuit of the winding h to be broken and the load circuit is connected to the battery through contacts m<3>, p<1>. The preferred form of switch is shown in Fig. 2. Specification 6918/14 is referred to.
