Abstract
1,134,582. Purification of sulpholane-type solvents. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 6 April, 1967, No. 15801/67. Heading C2C. Sulpholane-type solvents containing corrosive contaminants are purified by contact with an aqueous solution containing an alkaline compound and with an alkali-resistant liquid, which is sparingly soluble in water and which dissolves the sulpholane-type solvent more readily than water, separating a solvent phase containing alkali-resistant liquid from the aqueous phase and subsequently recovering the sulpholane-type solvent from the solvent phase. The preferred alkali-resistant liquids are hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene. The aqueous alkaline solution is suitably provided by dilute aqueous solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt, e.g. NaOH. The aqueous alkaline solution preferably also contains a neutral salt, e.g. NaC1, to counteract the formation of emulsions and facilitate gravity separation of the aqueous and solvent phases. It is preferred to separate the sulpholane from the solvent phase by distillation. The process is illustrated by reference to schematic flow diagrams (not shown).
