Abstract

1,134,442. Reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 20 Jan., 1966 [20 Jan., 1965], No. 2690/66. Heading G6C. [Also in Division H5] Nuclear reactor fuel elements are tested in a swimming pool reactor and are maintained at the temperature attained during irradiation, after the reactor has been shut down, by an electric furnace within the reactor. The helical copper coil 16 of the furnace is supplied from a high frequency source and produces induction currents in the aluminium block 1. The currents circulate round the bores 2, 3 and the gap 4. The current surrounding 3 produces a high frequency magnetic field within it which induces heating currents in specimen carrier cylinder 20. The thermocouple 22 measures the specimen temperature. The test specimen may be cooled by a flow of water through the pipe 23. The cylinder 20 may be of either molybdenum or niobium, and either a vacuum or helium atmosphere may be maintained round the furnace through the pipe 18.
