Abstract

Band. - In a coaster-brake mechanism for bicycles &c., a pinion 28, rotating with the driving-member 18, gears with racks 35 sliding in a cage 29 in such manner that, in driving, the racks are moved outwards to engage behind lugs 39 or with ratchet teeth provided on the inner surface of the hub, whereas, on back-pedalling, the racks are moved through the cage in the opposite directions so that they engage with, or behind, arms 40, or with a ring of ratchet teeth, upon a brake-operating disk 41. The brake comprises a split member 44 anchored by lugs 52 and expanded into contact with the hub by the preferably elliptical portion 47 of a lever 46, which is actuated by the engagement of a pin 50 upon the disk 41 with the recessed end 49 of the lever. The cage is retained in position by a washer 30 upon the reduced end of the driving-sleeve. Drag springs 54 may be provided upon the arms 40 or member 41 to bear upon the cage.
