Abstract
5240. Birmingham Small Arms Co., and Phillips, H. M. March 2. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing.-In a threespeed coaster hub for cycles &c., a laterallymovable clutch member 15, mounted upon a screw-threaded part 14 of the internal wheel 13 of one of the gear trains, is adapted to drive the hub on all three speeds and to engage with the brake actuator 9 when the pedals are turned backwards. The sun-wheels 4, 5 slide together upon the axle, and are arranged to engage with teeth 7 upon the carrier 1, clutch jaws 4<b> upon the axle, and clutch jaws 8 upon the brake actuator 9. A part 21 mounted in a keyway or slot 20 in the axle has ribs or projections 22, 23 to engage annular grooves 18, 19 in the sun-wheels which are thus connected for axial movements but are capable of relative rotation. The control-rod, preferably made in two parts 31, 32, passes through the central hole of a cross-bar 24 which is introduced through an opening 27 into an annular recess 25 in the wheel 5. Springs 34, 35 bear upon the two sides of the cross-bar. A drag spring 42 is provided for the clutch member 15.
