Apparatus for clamping wrap-round plates or electrotypes to a forme cylinder which has a longitudinal channel in its surface comprises a series of open grooves extending over the width of the cylinder and in a circumferential direction to and from the channel; displaceable ring members which fit into the grooves, the surface of each ring member having inclined bores to receive truss clamps, and each ring member being provided with rack teeth on the underside at one end engaging with a self-locking worm carried on the cylinder to tension the plates. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of one half of a cylinder comprising the core 1 and a jacket 2 with the end of a plate 16 visible near the top; Fig. 4 is a plan view. The jacket surface is provided with a number of regularly spaced grooves 3 which are open at the ends 4 of the jacket 2, the ends forming the longitudinal channel; variable length ring members 5 are adapted to be inserted in these grooves. The surface of each ring member has a number of inclined bores 6 whilst at one end, on the underside, are gear teeth 7. Truss clamps 8 with bearing pins 9 are inserted in the bores 6 and engage with recesses milled in the plate 16. Below each groove entry, i.e. in the channel walls, is provided a bore into which a bearing bush 10 is pressed. A worm 12, which engages with the teeth 7 on member 5, is supported in the bush 10 by a bearing pin 11 and in a guide yoke 14 by a bearing pin 13; the guide yoke 14 has a further square guide hole 15 to take the end of the ring member 5, worm 12 and yoke 14 together with this member forming the clamping unit. In use, a ring member 5 of the required length is inserted in a groove 3; a worm 12 with yoke guide 14 is inserted in a bearing bush 10, the hole 15 retaining the member 5; the last inclined bore 6 is fitted with truss clamp 8 engaging a slot in plate 16. The plate is then tensioned by rotating the worm with a boxspanner which engages with a hexagonal hole 13<SP>1</SP> in the worm. Further lateral clamps 19 may also be used in combination with longitudinal grooves 18; if the plates are wide, more than one ring member and clamping unit can be used (cf. Fig. 4), and each plate 16 is clamped at each end (Fig. 2 and Fig. 1, not shown).
