Abstract

A method of packaging ladies' stockings comprises winding the stocking 12 about a widthwise axis intermediate its ends within a sheath 20 into a spiral roll 38 which commences at its centre as and continues for at least a substantial part of the roll as a two-start spiral, placing a tube-like receptacle 37 on sheath 20, and then separating the sheath from the roll and receptacle by relative axial movement, leaving the roll within the receptacle. A twostart spiral roll stocking package of the above type is also claimed. As described, the roll 38 is formed on a winder 15; sheath 20 has a cleft 22 for inserting the stocking into a cleft 16 of winder 15 when clefts 16, 22 are horizontally disposed. After winding, casing 37 is slipped over sheath 20 and the latter driven through 90‹. The operator presses casing 37 into one or both of slots 21 in the sheath and removes roll 38 from winder head 20 by frictional engagement with the casing 37. A number of the resulting packages may be inserted into separable pockets 40 of a web 41. Alternatively the receptacles themselves may be joined side by side along tear lines. The receptacles may have closure flaps. A sheet of paper may be incorporated in the outermost convolution of a roll 38, and each roll may comprise two simultaneously rolled stockings. The apparatus may include a butterfly cam (30), Fig. 2 (not shown) so that cleft 16 ends up parallel with bench top 11 when rotation ceases.
