1,132,727. Doffing and donning; severing yarns. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP. 8 Nov., 1966 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 50042/66. Heading DID. In automatic bobbin-exchange apparatus having mounted on an overhead rail system above the spindles of a spinning-frame grippers for full and empty bobbins, cutting means are associated with the grippers to sever the yarn between the spindles and the grippers for the full bobbins after the full bobbins have been doffed and empty bobbins donned. As shown, rails 4, 5 suspended from a crane by ropes 6, 7 respectively carry grippers 10, 15 for empty and full bobbins. A cutting bar is attached to the line of grippers 15 for full bobbins, levers 24 connecting it to a continuous shaft 21 connected at 21 to some of the grippers. The shaft can be rotated to swing the cutter by a handle 23. The rails 4, 5 can be separately raised and lowered, rope 7 passing through a hole in rail 4. Each of the grippers 15 comprises a hollow rubber cylinder connected at 18 to a continuous air-pipe 16. When the cylinders are inflated, the bobbins are gripped; when they are vented, the bobbins are released. At the end of a set, the crane is so positioned that the grippers 15 fit over the filled bobbins, and the cylinders are inflated to grip the bobbins. The crane is now moved to fit the grippers 10 each previously fitted with an empty bobbin over the spindles and remove the grippers 15 to the front of the machine. The yarns extending between the filled bobbins are held down by the empty bobbins, and the cutter is operated. The filled bobbins are then released.
