Abstract

A thermosetting resin impregnated laminate is provided with a highly pigmented surface layer by (a) coating a paper-surfacing layer, which has been impregnated with a curable melamine formaldehyde resin, with a pigmented melamine formaldehyde resin solution containing 60-80 parts by weight of resin and 40-20 parts pigment, (b) applying an adhesive to the uncoated side of this layer, (c) applying this layer to one or more fibrous (e.g. paper) core layers which have been impregnated with a curable synthetic resin (e.g. a melamineurea resin) so that the adhesive contacts the core and (d) uniting core and surface layer by heat and pressure. Alternatively, step (a) may be modified by using an unimpregnated paper and coating with sufficient pigmented resin to penetrate through to the underside whilst yet providing a substantial surface coating. The coating may be sprayed on and then dried. Adhesive application may be, e.g. by spray, brush or roller.
