Abstract

1,200,904. Laminates. NORTON CO. 15 Nov., 1967 [15 Nov., 1966], No. 51926/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and D2] A wear resistant structure is produced by forming a composite structure including a substructure having apertures therein arranged in a prescribed pattern and a smooth, continuous uniformly thick coating of hard ceramic material thereon, said coating spanning the area of the apertured portions of the sub-structure and subsequently applying pressure to the coated surface of the composite structure to duplicate therein the apertures of the substructure. The wear resistant structure may be the suction box covers found in paper making machinery. In an embodiment the coating is pre-formed by flame spraying ceramic oxide material upon a transfer member having a coating of a release agent e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene on its receiving surface. The coated side of the transfer member is cemented to the sub-structure by a thermosetting adhesive layer e.g. a fibrous mat formed of cellulose fibres impregnated with an uncured epoxy or phenolic thermosetting resin, or preferably a deformable thin fibreglass mat impregnated with a phenolic resin. The resulting structure is subjected to pressure which causes the thermosetting layer to fill any voids between the coating and the sub-structure and heated to cure the thermosetting layer. The coating and the sub-structure is then removed from the transfer member. To extend apertures in the substructure through the continuous layer of the pre-formed coating, pressure is applied to the outer surface of the coating by compressing a deformable and resilient medium against the exposed surface of the coating. A ductile metal layer may be interposed between the deformable medium and the exposed surface of the pro-formed coating.
