1,067,085. Laminates. CHEMISCHE WERKE HœLS A.G. and HEINRICH KLING FURNIERWERK. Aug. 21, 1964 [Aug. 29, 1963], No. 34220/64. Heading B5N. A process for bonding and lacquering veneers comprises coating the carrier to which the veneer is to be bonded with a solvent-free lacquer based on a precondensed or prepolymerized thermosetting synthetic resin, pressing the veneer on to the carrier in one pressing stage and under such a pressure that lacquer penetrates through to its surface and the lacquer is then brought to its final cured condition by pressure and heat. In a modification of the process an intermediate layer of lacquer soaked paper is laid on the carrier. Specified carriers are hardboard, chipboard, plywood, polyvinyl chloride, polyesters, expanded plastics, natural or synthetic rubber, glass, aluminium, brass and iron. The veneers may have been pretreated chemically, physically or mechanically e.g. by soaking, impregnation, dusting, laminating, disintegrating fibres, compacting, smoothing or perforation. Specified lacquers (which may be pigmented) are mixtures of unsaturated linear polyesters with unsaturated monomers e.g. styrene, phenol-aldehyde resins, melamine-aldehyde resins, butadienestyrene resins and polyurethanes. Catalysts and accelerators may be present in the lacquers.
