Abstract

1,131,763. Controlling aircraft by thrust deflection. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 24 May, 1966 [12 Aug., 1965], No. 23092/66. Heading B7G. The lift fan of a VTOL or STOL aircraft is disposed in a duct 14 closable by a plurality of overlapping aerofoil vanes 16 each being of generally V-shape and each being rotatable by the same or different amounts about pivots 30, 32 at the ends thereof into open positions in which the fan air is either directed downwardly for lift, or turned by the vanes rearwardly for forward thrust. The V-shape of the aerofoil cones prevents throttling of the discharged air from occurring. The V-angles and the span lengths may be different for different vanes and the first vane, Fig. 4 (not shown), may be formed from two parts connected together by a hinge (41) having an axis parallel to the pivot axes. Each aerofoil may be provided with means for varying the camber angle over at least a part of its surface. The inlet to the fan may alternatively be provided with the arrangement of aerofoil vanes described.
