Abstract
1,130,991. Reducing the noise of explosions. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 27 July, 1966 [29 July, 1965], No. 33717/66. Heading A5A. The noise of an explosion in a process involving the detonation of an explosive charge is reduced by dispensing water particles into the path of the shock wave emanating from explosion by simultaneously detonating a separate charge to disperse the water. The weight of water dispersed is at least 10 and up to 100 times the weight of the main and 100 and up to 15,000 times the weight of the separate explosive charge. The main explosion may be in a confined space excavated out of rock and the water dispersed in a tunnel venting the confined space and over an area extending at -least 100 feet along the tunnel. The tunnel may also be provided with a massive movable plug closing 95% of the cross-sectional area of the tunnel. The plug may suitably be a loaded truck movable on rails.
