Abstract

1,130,950. Rolling; welding by pressure; producing rods. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 29 April, 1966 [3 May, 1965], No. 18971/66. Headings B3A, B3M and B3R. [Also in Division C7] A method of making clad metal strands comprises moving a rapidly oxydizing metal core 1 coated with a slowly oxidizating metal 5 between two strips 3 of protective metal and through a heated chamber 11, to a pair of rolls 13 where the strips are solid-phase bonded to and around the core. The core 1 of stainless steel is cleaned and electrolytically coated with a layer of copper, silver, gold or any suitable chromium free metal in an acid bath after which it is fed slidably through a contact 9 into a reducing atmosphere of dissociated ammonia. The strips 3 of cupronickel or titanium are fed slidably through contacts 7. One of the rolls 13 is connected through an electrical control system 17 to the contacts 7, 9 so that when the core and the strips contact this roll a circuit is completed and by means of the control system 17 the temperature of the core and the strips can be adjusted. The rolls 13 nip the edges (23) of the strips 3 together, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the flashes 27 may be cut off by the rolls or later by any suitable means known in the art. The cladded strand is cooled as it leaves the rolls in a water cooled retort 31 containing a nitrogen atmosphere and by a water spray 33.
