Abstract
1,130,779. Acetylene. DIAMOND ALKALI CO. 13 Sept., 1966 [15 Sept., 1965; 6 June, 1966], No. 40946/66. Heading C5E. Acetylene is prepared in an electric arc reactor by subjecting a hydrocarbon feed within the reaction zone of the reactor to a temperature of 1100-4200‹ C and a pressure of 2À5-20 ats. The feed may be one or more C 1 -C 8 hydrocarbons, e.g. methane, ethane, propane, isopropane, butane, isobutane, ethylene, propylene, butylene, benzene, toluene and xylenes. The feed may be mixed with a diluent, e.g. hydrogen or argon and then subjected to the electric arc or the diluent gas may be subjected to the are 'and the hydrocarbon feed then mixed therewith in the reaction zone. After reaction the product gas may be cooled rapidly by the injection of a cold gas or liquid, e.g. further hydrocarbon feed or water.
