Abstract
1,258,807. Producing aromatics, olefins and diolefins. FOSTER WHEELER CORP., and SUN OIL CO. 21 March, 1969 [21 March, 1968], No. 15059/69. Heading C5E. Aromatics, olefins (particularly ethylene) and di-olefins are obtained from naphtha by a process comprising (a) catalytic reforming to convert naphthenes to aromatics, (b) pyrolysing the reformate, without intermediate separation of its normally liquid components, at a coil outlet temperature of 1450-1550 F. for 0À1-0À6 second, and (c) quenching to produce a gas stream comprising olefins and di-olefins and a predominantly aromatic liquid stream boiling in the range 169-350 F. Suitable reforming conditions are 600-1000 F., pressures up to 1000 p.s.i.g., hydrogen : hydrocarbon ratio up to 10,000, and Pt/alumina or chromia/alumina or catalyst. The pyrolysis may be carried out in the presence of an inert diluent, e.g. steam, N 2 or CO 2 . As particularly described, the process also includes the following additional steps: (i) initial desulphurization of the naphtha; (ii) mixing the reformate, before pyrolysis, with a recycled C 5 cut; (iii) hydrotreating the aromatic-rich product to remove olefins and di-olefins; (iv) removing C 4 and C 5 cuts from the hydrotreated pyrolysate, and recycling the C 5 cut to (ii); (v) removing benzene from the pyrolysate; and (vi) dealkylating the higher aromatic residue in either the presence or the absence of a catalyst. Examples describe the reforming and pyrolysis steps (a) and (b), the products being ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, xylenes and styrene.
