Abstract

1,130,755. Heating gases by compression. ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc. 2 Nov., 1965, No. 46446/65. Heading F4U. [Also in Division F1] Gases are heated by recirculation through a centrifugal, crossflow, or axial flow rotor. As illustrated in Fig. 5, the blades 19 of a centrifugal rotor draw gas into a housing 10 from an inlet 11, and recycle the gas as shown by arrows 16 around a toroidal member 15<SP>1</SP>. A butterfly valve 23 allows the discharge of a portion of the recycled gas. Stationary blades 20, 21 are provided on the member 15<SP>1</SP> on either side of the rotor blades. An annular valve 51 of U-section is moved by thermostats 53 to control the flow cross-section of the recirculation path. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, a cross-flow rotor 41 operates in a cylindrical housing 43 between an inlet 45 and an outlet 47. Starting blades 44 cause recirculation of a major portion of the gas from the rotor 41, the recirculation being controlled by a pivoted valve 48. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), a circular array of axial flow rotor blades (33) is employed and recirculation occurs within a toroidal body (30) surrounding the blades.
