Abstract

1,130,554. Sizing textile fibres. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Oct., 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 21906/65. Heading DIP. Unfabricated organic fibres other than wool are treated with a size in solution in a halogenated organic solvent in which it is soluble. The fibres may be in the form of unspun fibres or filaments or yarns. Suitable sizes are oils, fats, paraffin waxes, chlorinated paraffin waxes, chlorinated rubber, blends containing non-drying alkyd resins and polymers of vinyl acetate or methyl methacrylate. Suitable organic solvents are trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene and 1,1 ,2-trichloro-1,2,2,-trifluoroethane. The organic solvent solutions may contain 1-10% by weight of the size and may be applied to the fibre by passing the fibre through the solution or by spraying, the organic solvent being subsequently removed from the fibre. After weaving, the fabric may be scoured with the organic solvent to remove the size. Cotton, flax. regenerated cellulose, nylon, polyester, polypropylene, acetate rayon and acrylic fibres may be treated.
