Abstract

Fibrous materials are rendered resistant to the accumulation of electrostatic charges whilst simultaneously dry-cleaning them by treating the materials during the dry cleaning, and in the presence of a detergent applied thereto during washing with the solvent, with a dry-cleaning solvent solution or dispersion of an antistatic agent capable of being dispersed or dissolved therein in an amount of from 0.02 to 10 per cent by weight of the solvent. The materials may first be washed with the solvent containing only the drycleaning detergent prior to rinsing the materials with the solvent having the antistatic agent therein. The antistatic agents may comprise (1) quaternary ammonium compounds, those specified comprising ethyl dimethyl octadecyl ammonium ethyl hydrogen phosphite; N-soya-N-ethyl morpholinium ethosulphate; dimethylbenzyl dehydroabietyl ammonium chloride; alkyl (C9 to C15) ethyl ammonium ethosulphate dioleate containing 30 polyoxyethylene units per molecule; alkyl (C9 to C15) tolyl methyl trimethyl ammonium chloride; and p-diisobutyl phenoxyethoxy ethyl dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, (2) organic acid phosphates, the specified compounds comprising diethyl acid phosphate; mono-iso-amyl acid phosphate; and diortho-cresol acid phosphate; (3) partial esters of polyhydric alcohols with higher fatty acids, particularly glycerol monooleate; sorbitol mono-oleate and propylene glycol mono-oleate; and (4) naphthenic acid and ammonium naphthenate. The solvents may comprise benzene, chlorinated hydrocarbons, Stoddard's solvent and naphtha. The dry-cleaning detergents are the usual materials, provided that they are compatible with the antistatic agents. Materials of cotton, silk, wool, regenerated cellulose, nylon, polyesters or polyacrylonitrile may be treated.ALSO:Fibrous materials are rendered resistant to the accumulation of electrostatic charges whilst simultaneously drycleaning them by treating the materials during the dry cleaning, and in the presence of a detergent applied thereto during washing with the solvent, with a drycleaning solvent solution or dispersion of an antistatic agent capable of being dispersed or dissolved therein in an amount of from 0.02 to 10 per cent by weight of the solvent. The materials may first be washed with the solvent containing only the dry-cleaning detergent prior to rinsing the materials with the solvent having the antistatic agent therein. The antistatic agents may comprise (1) quaternary ammonium compounds, those specified comprising ethyl disulphenyl octadecyl ammonium ethyl hydrogen phosphite; N-soya-N-ethyl morpholinium ethosulphate; dimethylbenzyl dehydroabietyl ammonium chloride; alkyl (C9 to C15) ethyl ammonium ethosulphate dioleate containing 30 polyoxyethylene units per molecule; alkyl (C9 to C15) tolyl methyl trimethyl ammonium chloride; and p-diisobutyl phenoxyethoxy ethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride. (2) organic acid phosphates, the specified compounds comprising diethyl acid phosphate; monoiso-amyl acid phosphate; and di-orthocresol acid phosphate; (3) partial esters of polyhydric alcohols with higher fatty acids, particularly glycerol mono-oleate, sorbitol mono-oleate and propylene glycol mono-oleate; and (4) naphthenic acid and ammonium naphthenate. The solvents may comprise benzene chlorinated hydrocarbons, Stoddards solvent and naphtha. The dry-cleaning detergents are the usual materials, provided that they are compatible with the antistatic agents. Fabrics or fibrous articles may be cleaned and the fibres may be natural or synthetic.
