Abstract

1,129,884. Supply -systems for arc furnaces. G.W.B. FURNACES Ltd. 10 Nov., 1965 [21 Aug., 1964], No. 34298/64. Heading H2H. The heavy current connections between the electrodes 2 of an arc or reduction furnace and a three-phase transformer 6 are each in the form of two physically -adjacent conductors comprising.a "go" and a "return." Thus the delta connections of the secondary windings 7 of the supply transformer are made at the furnace electrodes and the reactance of the heavy current connections is minimized. The connections comprise water-cooled insulated cables, the cooling water flowing along each cable being controlled by a valve 19 situated between a tank 11 and a sump 12, a pump 13 being used to restore the water -to the tank from the sump. The valve 19 is controlled by a control unit 16 to which are fed signals from a current transformer 17 responsive to the current supply to an electrode 2, thermo-couples 14 monitoring the temperature of the furnace roof, thermo-couples 15 responsive to the temperature of the furnace wall and a thermo-couple 18 responsive to the temperature of the water in the cable, so as to control the temperature and hence the resistance of the cable whereby enhanced balancing of the electrode currents may be obtained.
