Abstract

1366690 Skin effect resistance heating element CHISSO CORP 19 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 53807/71 Heading H5H [Also in Division H2] Elongate A.C. heating apparatus suitable for heating pipelines comprising a source and an element, preferably a ferrous tube for carrying "skin-effect" current, is adapted so that the voltage at any point in the apparatus is of a value sufficiently low so that insulating problems of the conductors employed in the high temperature environment are obviated. As shown the tube is divided into sections 10-13 and together with associated conductors 14-17 form closed loops which are arranged in a line and coupled together via transformers 18-21. If the maximum allowed voltage in any section is V then the output at each secondary is adapted to be V and the currents 22-25 are arranged to have the values i, 2i, 3i, 4i respectively, the voltage drops in the sections being V, V/ 2 , V/ 3 , V/ 4 so that the same power V-i is dissipated in each, and each transformer has a power output equal to the total load in all the sections further from the source than itself. The resistance of the pipe sections 10-13 are adapted to these values by ranging the physical properties of the pipes, or a shunt conductor is employed across the pipe length which may comprise a metallic sheath placed over the insulation of a conductor running through the centre of the pipe to connect with the far end thereof or may comprise a metal filling of the pipe, e.g. with sodium or similar low melting point metal which may be introduced in a liquid state without damage to the insulation of the conductor.
