Abstract

1,129,612. Tobacco smoke filters; cigarettes. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. 21 Feb., 1966 [24 Feb., 1965], No. 7986/65. Heading A2C. A method of making filter-tipped cigarettes by feeding stubs in alternation with unwrapped tobacco portions and enclosing the stubs and tobacco portions in a paper web to produce a composite continuous rod, includes the step of securing stiffening strips to the paper web in such a manner that a strip lies across the web adjacent each end of a stub, so that when the paper is folded about the tobacco portions and stubs, the strip forms a tubular reinforcement adjacent the stub. Tobacco is fed through a chimney 1 (Fig. 1) to the underside of a suction conveyer 2 which has perforations extending slightly less than the length of a double length tobacco portion of a filter cigarette. Cigarette portions 4 are formed thereon and trimmed by a trimmer 5. A paper wrapping strip 7 is drawn from a reel 8, gummed at 9 and provided with stiffening strips 15, cut from a strip 10 by a knife 13. Double length filter stubs 17 are supplied by a roller 18 to the gummed strip at a position between the stiffeners. The strip 7 is fed over an endless band 21 and under the end conveyer 2 so that the tobacco portions 4 are deposited thereon between the stubs and slightly overlying the stiffeners. The composite rod is passed through a garniture 22, formed into a continuous rod length and cut at 25 into individual cigarettes 26. The cigarette 26 (Fig. 4) comprises a stub 17A, a stiffener 15 abuting the stub, a tobacco portion 4A spaced from the stub but overlying the stiffener 15, and a wrapper strip 7 enclosing the whole.
