Abstract
1,128,737. Electro-plating with chromium. UDYLITE CORP. Aug.1, 1967 [Aug. 3, 1966], No.35351/67. Heading C7B. To reduce pitting of basis metal when electroplating and also to reduce mist and spray formation with chromium from a CrO 3 bath, the bath contains also 0À002 to 0À5 g/l of a surfactant sultam of the formula where R 2 is a C 12 to 22 substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group; R 4 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, chloro, methyl or ethyl; n is 1 to 5; A is a substituted or unsubstituted N- heterocyclic 5 or 6 - membered ring or a divalent N<SP>+</SP> (R 1 R 3 ) radical in which R 1 and R 3 are hydrogen or substituted or unsubstituted C 1 to C 18 alkyl or cycloalkyl groups and the total number of C atoms is not more than 18. The bath may also contain a perfluoroalkane sulphonic or phosphoric acid. The baths may contain also chromates, dichromates or polychromates and as catalyst radicals one or more of sulphate, fluoride, silicofluoride, fluoborate, fluoaluminate, fluotitanate, fluozirconate, trichloroacetate, monochloroacetate, and monochloropropionate. The bath may further contain cations such as Na, K, Li, NH 4 , Mg, Ca, Sr, Cu, Zn, Co and pyridinium. Typical operating temperatures are in the range 70‹ to 130‹F. For thick hard chrome coatings e.g. on steel, use of perfluoroalkane sulphonic acids should be avoided as encouraging pitting but a perfluoroalkyl amine may be used.
