A tool 10, Fig. 2, comprising a knife 16 and sealing members 12, 13, transversely seams and severs tubing formed around continuously-fed articles G. The jaws seam only the end Q of the package, the open end of the adjacent package being closed by a re-usable closure, e.g. by removable clip applied at a station (3), Fig. 1 (not shown). Ribs 14, 5 may assist in holding the tube during severance. In the form shown, the tube is formed from strip folded around the articles by a shoe (7) and longitudinally seamed by rollers (9). The operations may also be performed whilst the bag is vertical or inclined.
