Abstract

1,127,815. Two-part couplings. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 10 Aug., 1966 [24 Aug., 1965], No. 35773/66. Heading H2E. An edge connector comprises an insulating housing 10 having cavities 12 opening from a central recess 14, resilient insulating inserts 22, each of which carries contacts 20 on a pair of its opposite faces, being located in some or all of the cavities 12 and contacts which are wider than the contacts 20 being inserted directly into any remaining cavities. Each insert has a projection 64 which snaps over a central upstanding wall 24 in the housing 10 and a sloping outer surface which engages a corresponding surface in a cavity 12. Each contact comprises a flat metal strip folded into a contact loop 52 and a terminal loop 54, the loops resiliently engaging bosses 42, 44 and a sloping shoulder 48 on one face of the corresponding insert 22. The dontacts 20 are connected to leads 62 by contact pins 60 which are crimped to the leads, the pins 60 being inserted in the rear of the housing 10, on either or both sides of each contact 20, until projections on the pins engage recesses 58 in the contact terminal loops 54. Preferably the contacts are of an alloy of copper, nickel or beryllium copper and the housing 10 is of moulded plastics material with apertured extensions for securing to a support.
