Abstract

1,127,700. Forms of wood. S. A. VERKOR. 25 Nov., 1966 [28 Sept., 1966], No. 52789/66. Heading B5L. [Also in Division C3] A bagasse panel is made by (a) preparing dried bagasse in which the fibres and the parenchymatous tissue are retained in association with each other, (b) fragmenting the dried bagasse into tablet-like particles, (c) adding a synthetic resinous bonding compound with a hardening agent, (d) shaping the mixture into a panel, and (e) applying heat to set. The bagasse may be artificially dried as soon as it leaves the sugar mills, optionally after presorting to free it of deteriorated cells and detached fibrillµ. The residual moisture after drying may be 15-20%. The dried bagasse may be placed in a hammer crusher to form particles of which at least 50% have area 20-40 mm.<SP>2</SP>, and whose length is 100-200 x the thickness. The particles may be bonded with 8 wt. per cent of urea-formol resin of concentration 50 wt. per cent, the humidity of the particles being then adjusted to 14%. A panel of 1À22 x 1À22 m. may then be formed and pressed at 140‹ C., cooled, sandpapered on both sides, and conditioned at a temperature of 20‹ C. at relative humidity 65%. The panels may be 12-20 mm. thick.
