Abstract
1,127,408. Coating with metals, Al-Zn alloys; coating by sintering. BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. Oct. 13, 1965 [April 2, 1965], No. 43394/65. Headings C7A, C7D and C7F. A ferrous base, e.g. a strip or wire or hardware has a coating comprising 25 to 70% by weight Al, nil to 0À6% Pb and the balance Zn. Si may also be present in an amount not less than 0À5% of the Al, and preferably about 3%. A ferrous strip is cleaned in an alkali, rinsed, heated to 1200‹F. and passed through a hydrogen atmosphere to a molten coating bath. The coating may be chilled by an air blast. Alternatively a powdered mixture Al and Zn is applied to one or both sides of a steel strip, compacted and sintered. In an example the bath comprises 32% Al, 67% Zn, and 1% Si.
