Abstract

1,127,352. Electronic calculators. MULLARD Ltd. 31 May, 1966, No. 24221/66. Heading G4A. A computing machine has a number of registers each comprising a chain of digit storing cold-cathode decade stepping tube stages, one stage at the end of each chain storing a digit indicating the position of the decimal point in the corresponding stored number. In the embodiment described the machine has an input register and two output registers, the decimal point stage of the former being stepped by a control circuit which supplies a pulse from a cold cathode tube (V5, Fig. 2, not shown) via OR gate (OG4) to the decimal point stage each time a digit key is pressed to insert a number into the input register. When the decimal point position is to be recorded in this register an inhibit signal from a key DP inhibits the V5 pulses while the remaining digits of the number are recorded in the input register. Two further control circuits, Input and Output Control, are also provided to control decimal point positioning during Add, Subtract, Multiply and division operations, these circuits each comprising a ring counter of twelve cold cathode trigger tubes, the particular tube ignited determining the decimal point position of the number in the register at present controlled by the corresponding circuit. During an addition or subtraction between a number in an accumulator register and the input register, the Input and Output counters store the decimal point positions of the two numbers, and operate gates to ensure that the correct digits of the two numbers are added. During a multiplication operation the two decimal point digits of the input and accumulator registers are added by the decimal point control circuit to register a digit position corresponding to the product number, whilst during a division process, the decimal point digit of the dividend is added to the " nines " complement of the decimal point digit of the divisor and " tens " in the sum ignored, whereby the decimal point digit indicates the position of the decimal point in the quotient. The machine also incorporates reset circuits for zeroizing the registers and their corresponding decimal point stages.
