Abstract

112,726. Davey, H. June 5, 1917. Combustion - product engines.-In a plant comprising a multiplestage engine, gaseous or liquid fuel is burned in the closed furnace of a steam boiler at a pressure equal to the initial pressure of the low-pressure section of the steam engine and the products of combustion together with expanded steam are used in the low-pressure element. The steam from the boiler is heated in all the stages of expansion, and is finally superheated by the products of combustion. The combined air and fuel pump d supplies the furnace e, Fig. 3, and the products of combustion pass through superheaters f, g and mix with the exhaust from cylinder b prior to passing to cylinder c. The removal of steam and products of combustion from the cylinder c may be effected by means of a condenser and pumps, or as shown in Fig. 4. The exhaust first passes to a condenser i in the usual way, and then the exhaust valve is closed early in the stroke and the mixture remaining in the cylinder is forced through a feed-water heater k into the atmosphere. In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the products of combustion may be removed after being discharged with steam into a condenser p by means of a rotary air pump s driven by a turbine wheel r operated by the exhaust mixture. The initial exhaust passes through the wheel r until the valve X is opened.
