Abstract

[Also in Division C3] Electric conductors are provided with insulating coatings by solutions containing in an organic solvent a polyesterimide containing (a) 1-8 wt % of N in 5-membered imide rings and (b) 0.2-2 equivalents per imide ring of residues of a dihydric phenol and/or a monohydric phenol carrying at least one other ester- or imide-forming group and/or an alkyl ether of such a phenol carrying at least two ester- or imide-forming groups and/or (c) up to 2 equivalents per imide ring of residues of an aromatic compound symmetrically incorporated during condensation and having a crosslinking or chain-branching function (see Division C3). In Examples mixtures or precondensates of trimellitic anhydride and methylene dianiline (or pyromellitic anhydride and glycine) are condensed with (usually) ethylene glycol and a phenol of type (b) above and/or trimesic or pyromellitic acid (fully esterified with the glycol or tris (hydroxyethyl) mellitic triimide; other acids, e.g. terephthalic, and diols, e.g. ethanolamine/pyromellitic acid adduct may be present. The products are dissolved in a mixture of cresol, xylene, propylene glycol, naphtha (and/or tetralin) and in Ex. 2 diacetone alcohol, to which may be added polybutyl titanate (and in Ex. 8 a zinc resinate, a silicone oil and a masked isocyanate) and used to coat copper wires in a lacquering machine.
