Abstract
A process for the production of a polyester comprises esterifying an alcohol having at least two alcoholic hydroxyl groups per molecule with a dicarboxylic acid containing imido groups, of the formula <FORM:1055287/C3/1> in which the rings depicted are five-membered rings and in which Ag 1 and Ag 11 are aromatic radicals. The polyesters may be cross-linked, specified cross-linking agents being alkyl and aryl titanates, oil-soluble salts of Al, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Sn, Ti, U, Zn, Cd, Pd and Ca, and polyisocyanates. Specified polyols are hexanediol, dimethylol cyclohexane, quinitol, ethylene glycol, bis-(41-hydroxyethoxyphenyl)-2:2 - propane, 1:4 - di - (hydroxyethoxy)-benzene, pentaerythritol, glycerol, trimethylol propane and sorbitol. Specified imido-containing dicarboxylic acids are those made by reacting anhydrides of aromatic tricarboxylic acids, e.g. trimellitic anhydride with diamines of the formula H2N-Ag 11-NH2. In a modification of the process, the polyesters are made by reacting a mixture comprising an aromatic tricarboxylic acid anhydride, a diamine and a polyol. Specified solvents for the polyesters are cresols, xylenols, diacetone alcohol and methoxyethyl acetate, optionally in admixture with aromatic hydrocarbons.ALSO:An electrical conductor has an insulating coating produced from a stoving varnish comprising a polyester made from a polyol and a dicarboxylic acid containing amido groups (see Division C3), a cross-linking agent for said polyester and a volatile organic solvent. In Example 3, copper wires are stored with compositions composing polybutyl titanate, benzene, uresol and:- (A) and (B) a polyester derived from glycerol, ethylene glycol, dimethyl terephthate and the reaction product of trimellitic acid anhydride with 4:4\sv-diaminodiphenyl methane and (C) a polyester as in (A) and (B) but with the diamine replaced by 4:4\sv-diaminodiphenyl sulphone.
