Abstract
An electrically insulating varnish comprises a resin produced by esterifying trimellitic acid or anhydride with excess ethylene glycol and condensing the ester with a compound H2N-Ar-R and an organic solvent of which at least 57 weight per cent is constituted by an oxygen-containing compound. R is NH2 or COOH and Ar represents a p-substituted phenyl group or a 4,41-substituted diphenyl ether or diphenyl methane group. Specified compounds are p,p1-methylene dianiline; p,p1-oxydianiline; and p-aminobenzoic acid. The varnish may also contain a setting and/or adhesion-providing agent, e.g. a polyisocyanate, a titanium ester or zinc acetate. The oxygen-containing solvent may be phenol, cresol, xylenol, cyclohexanone or dimethyl formamide and may be diluted with benzene. In examples the properties of a copper wire coated with the varnish and annealed at 400-450 DEG C. are compared with those of a similar wire varnished with a terephthalate ester. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,031,085.ALSO:An electrically insulating varnish comprises a resin produced by esterifying trimellitic acid or anhydride with excess ethylene glycol and condensing the ester with a compound H2N-Ar-R and an organic solvent of which at least 57 wt. per cent. is consituted by an oxygen-containing compound. R represents NH2 or COOH and Ar a p-substituted phenyl or 4,4\sv-substituted dephenyl ether or methane group. The varnish may also contain a setting or adhesion-promoting agent, e.g. a polyisocyanate, a titanium ester or zinc acetate. The solvent may be phenol, cresol, xylenol, cyclohexanone or dimethyl formamide and may be diluted with benzene. In Examples a copper wire is coated with the varnish and annealed at 400 to 450 DEG C. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,031,085.
