Elliptically-wound coils of conducting wire retained on the contact surface of the plug or socket member-of a connection provide resilient contact areas which allow relative movement of the members. In a connection between -two metal tubes 1 and 3 (Fig. 1), coils in the form of spring bands 9 are housed in peripheral grooves 7 in a plug extension 5 to the tube 3 so that when the plug 5 is inserted in the end of the tube 1 the coils grip its inner surface. Alternatively, (Fig. 7, not shown), spring bands (86) may surround each limb of a T-shaped metal connecting member (82) so that expansible connections can be made with three metal tubes (84), each join being enclosed in insulation (83, 85). In one embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown), spring bands (76) are housed in diagonal grooves in opposite walls of a rectangular socket (72) for receiving a flat copper-plate (74). Alternatively (Fig. 2, not shown), spring bands (17, 18) are housed in grooves formed between a spacer-tube (20) and end caps (22, 23) in a double-ended metal socket (15). In a connection between two flat copper-plates (37, 39), (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), two further plates (41, 42) sandwich the end of one plate (39) to form a socket for receiving the other plate (37), the socket having grooves (48) which house spring bands (50, 51). In another embodiment, each coil is held in a rectangular insulating frame (103), (Figs. 8, 9, 10, not shown), and a number of frames are secured in peripheral grooves or between spacer tubes (117) on a plug (109). Preferably the wire coils are of silver alloy or silvered copper-beryllium bronze.
