Abstract

1,126,898. Piston and stuffing-box packing. H. M. HENDERSON and A. B. HENDERSON. 20 Dec., 1966 [24 Dec., 1965], No. 56938/66. Headings F2B and F2T. Packing for a piston or stuffing-box comprises a corrugated tubular member 1 of resilient material, the diameter of the roots of the internal corrugations being less than or equal to the diameter of the roots of the external corrugations. The internal and external apexes of the corrugations 2 are truncated to form cylindrical surfaces 3 having a common diameter and cylindrical surfaces 4 having a common diameter. The outermost part 5 of the end corrugations are thicker than the remainder of the member which is formed at its ends with a flat face 6. One or both ends of the member may be formed with a flat ended extension (7), Fig. 3 (not shown). To seal a shaft 10, Fig. 5, the member 1 is compressed in a stuffing-box 8 in the shaft housing 9 by a gland nut 11.
