Abstract
1,126,793. Continuous casting-machines. ANACONDA AMERICAN BRASS CO. 26 April, 1966, No. 18190/66. Heading B3F. In the continuous casting of thin-walled tubes, e.g. not greater than 0À25 inch, a mandrel 49 is cemented into a mould 46 and molten metal in a crucible (10), (Fig. 1, not shown), is first collected in secondary reservoirs 50 and 53 before passing through channels 51, 55 and into a tubular space between the mandrel and the mould in which the tube is formed. One or both of the secondary reservoirs may be used and the channels 51, 55 may be radial or tangential to the tubular space or reservoir. For casting very thin-walled tubes a collection chamber (69), (Fig. 10, not shown), is formed by bevelling inwards the mandrel just below its head (66) and axial channels (71) may extend through the mandrel head (66) connecting the tubular space (68) with the crucible (10). The combination of the collection chamber (69) and axial channels (71) provide means for releasing gas caused during cooling and may be incorporated in mandrels used for thicker walled tubes.
