Abstract

1472186 Friction welded tubes; drawing; broaching; welding by pressure INSTYTUT METALURGII ZELAZA IM STANISLAWA STASZICA 28 .May 1974 [30 May 1973] 23695/74 Headings B3A B3P B3L and B3R A method of making a tube comprises friction butt welding two tube blanks 1, 2 together, removing the outer flash of the weld, and drawing the welded tube while simultaneously removing the inner flash 5 of the weld. In one embodiment, Fig. 4, the tube is drawn through a single drawing die 10 comprising a sintered core 11 and a steel mounting 12 and over a cutting plug 6 to remove the weld flash 5. The plug is mounted on a holder 8 of a rod 9 and includes a cutter 7 which may have various configurations, Figs. 8-15 (not shown). In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5, a two-stage drawing die 14 is used. It comprises a pressure sleeve 15 containing lubricant 20, a first drawing die 16, a second drawing die 17 and seals 18. A guiding and calibrating plug 19 is provided on the cutter 7. The inner weld flash is cut-off with a blade 13 after passage through the first die 16. Lubricant 20 is forced through a slot 21 during movement of a tube and generates high pressure in chambers 22, 23. The plug 19 has a tapered working portion 24 and a tapered outlet portion 26. A mounting portion is provided for the cutter and an alternate form of plug, Fig. 7 (not shown), includes a cylindrical portion (27). The drawn tube is subjected to finishing operations which may include heat treatment, straightening, cutting and chamfering of the tube ends.
