Abstract

In a method for continuously drawing glass tubing from a body of molten glass, the glass is drawn through a cooled tubular die the entrance end of which is surrounded by a vacuum chamber. Molten glass 12 flows through an outlet 13 in a forehearth 11 over a tubular mandrel 15 including a bore-forming bell 18, and passes through a hole in a graphite or treated metal plate 21 as a molten stream of glass 19. A die 22 is cooled by directing air on to its outer surface through openings 51 in annular tubes 50. Suction is applied to two chambers 23, 33 which connect with the top and bottom respectively of the die 22 and as the molten glass <PICT:0982689/C1/1> <PICT:0982689/C1/2> tube 19 passes through the die 22 it is expanded by the suction into contact with the upper walls of the die 22 which rapidly cool the glass tube 19 causing it to contract slightly away from the walls. On reaching a two-piece plate 41, split at 36, the glass tube 19 laterally displaces the two halves of plate 41 and then passes through drawing rollers 20. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a vacuum chamber 62 surrounds a die 60 which is provided with spiral slots 61. For producing tubing of other than round cross-section shape, e.g. oval, dies may be used. The mandrel 15 and plate 21 may be offset from the axis of the die 22 to produce tubing with opposite wall areas of different thickness. The invention may also be used in apparatus for the upward drawing of tubing. U.S.A. Specifications 2,009,793 and 2,085,245 are referred to.
