Abstract
1,126,695. Propellants. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Sept., 1967 [14 Oct., 1966], No. 46070/66. Heading C1D. Granular propellent powder is glazed by forming a suspension of the powder grains and finely-divided carbon in a stirred liquid, wherein the powder is. substantially insoluble, and separating the resulting carbon-coated grains from the bulk of the liquid. The liquid may be water for single- and double-based nitrocellulose powders, or petrol for black powder. Carbon may be used in the form of carbon black or natural or synthetic graphite. The liquid from which the coated grains are removed may be replenished with carbon and used again. In examples, the propellent powders treated are composed of (a) nitrocellulose, nitroglycerine, mineral jelly and sym-diethyldiphenylurea; (b) nitrocellulose of two different nitrogen contents and diphenylamine. The powders have been rendered porous by including KNO 3 in the compositions and dissolving this salt out with hot water. Sym-dimethyldiphenylurea or the corresponding diethyl compound may be applied in aqueous suspension as a surface moderator prior to glazing.
