Abstract

A process for preparing a nonaqueous explosive sensitive to the detonating bait, characterized by the operations of (a) gelling a nitromethane with a gelling agent such as nitrocellulose; (b) substantially uniformly dispersing said gelled nitromethane into a pulverulent or granular nitrate in order to sensitize the latter, for which the gelled nitromethane is taken in an amount of about 10% to about 30% by weight and the nitrate in a amount of about 90% to about 70% by weight, said nitrate being selected from the group consisting of ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, lithium nitrate and mixtures of two or more of said nitrates, and said nitromethane being essentially the only nitroparaffin present in the said explosive; and (c) giving the latter a suitable form of use such as that of a configured load, a compressed starter charge, nodules, rods or in containers.
