Abstract

1,126,536. Tufted pile fabrics. W. R. GRACE & CO. 4 May, 1966 [5 May, 1965], No. 19778/66. Headings DIP and D1K. Tufted pile fabric having a woven primary backing of synthetic plastic yarn is produced by a process in which the synthetic plastic yarn is treated before tufting with a lubricant which does not react with or dissolve the synthetic plastic yarn. 0.2-12% based on the weight of the backing of the lubricant may be applied. The primary backing may be made from polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene/ propylene copolymer, polyester, polyamide, cellulose acetate or polyvinyl chloride yarns and the tufting yarn may be nylon. Both the warp and the weft yarns of the primary backing are preferable relatively flat although either the warp or weft yarns may be circular, or substantially round mono-filament yarn and/or yarns comprised of a multiplicity of low denier monofilaments. The lubricant may be a mineral oil, polyethylene glycol ester of a fatty acid having 8 or more carbon atoms or natural or synthetic low molecular weight wax. The lubricant may be applied to the warp and/or weft of the primary backing prior to weaving or the woven fabric 'may be treated with the lubricant prior to tufting, application being by spraying, dipping or roll coating.
