To achieve a faster build up of speed during reciprocating knitting without exceeding the critical speed of rotation of the needle cylinder the drive from a constant speed electric motor 1 to the reciprocating gear drive and clutch mechanism is through an induction clutch 2 which is under controlled slippage depending on the speed of the needle cylinder in either direction of reciprocation. Initially when rotating the cylinder in one direction or the other from rest there is no slippage but as the speed of the cylinder increases a tacko generator 21 driven from the needle cylinder produces a current voltage which is supplied to a regulater 24 which proceeds to supply a reduced power voltage to the induction clutch 2. Slippage thereby occurs until the maximum cylinder speed is achieved whereafter the reduction in speed of the cylinder causes the supply to the induction clutch to be restored and the drive to the mechanism to again occur without slippage.
