Integrating. - In pressuresdifference logs or speed indicators for ships in which the integral of the speed is transmitted as an indication of the distance travelled to a distant instrument, the speedindicator controls the time interval between successive actuations of a switch controlling the operating-circuit of the distance-indicator. The pressure gauge of the speed-indicator comprises chambers 3, 4, Fig. 2, connected to a Pitot-tube or the like and separated by a diaphragm 2, and packing 6 surrounding a pin 5. The movements of the pin are transmitted through multiplying gear 7, 11 to a pointer 14 moving over a speed dial. The support 13 of the pointer is provided with a part 16 curved empirically to produce a deflection of an arm 20, Fig. 3, loose on a shaft 18, dependent on the speed. This arm is held in engagement with the curved member 16 by a spring 22 and counter-balance 21, and carries a contact 19 adapted to close against a contact 26 on an arm 25 carried by an armature 23 of an electro-magnet 24. When the electro-magnet 24 is de-energized, the armature 23 and the arm 25 move upwards under the influence of a spring 230 until the contact 26 meets the contact 19, thereby closing a relay circuit 35, 38 and the circuit of the' electro-magnet, Figs. 3 and 7. The armature 23 is thus attracted and the circuit of the relay coil 35 is immediately broken. A second coil 36, however, still maintains the switch 38 closed, until a contact 27 on the arm 25 meets a fixed contact 28, when it is short-circuited, thus breaking the circuit of the electro-magnet 24. During the time the electro-magnet is energized, a switch 33 controlling the circuit of a distant indicator 34 is maintained closed, and the indicator is advanced. The return upward movement of the armature 23 is controlled by clockwork or other braking device to ensure a uniform speed, the armature being put in gear with the clockwork through a ball clutch 30 and disk 29, Fig. 5. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a modification in which the armature 23 is replaced by an electric motor rotating at a uniform speed and driving two worm wheels alternately, the contact arm 25 then moving uniformly in each direction This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
