Abstract

1,126,045. Coated metal. PENNSALT CHEMICALS CORP. 29 Sept., 1965 [30 Sept., 1964]. No. 41323/65. Heading B2K. [Also in Division C3] Formulations suitable for providing coatings to protect corridible materials comprise an aqueous solution of zinc dichromate, an acrylic acid polymer or copolymer having a molecular weight from 144 (acrylic acid dimer) to 25,000, and a water-soluble compound which reduces the zinc dichromate at high temperatures at which the coatings are cured, the concentration of each of the dichromate and polymer being from ¢% to 8% by weight. In a modification, the acrylic acid polymer is replaced by a homopolymer of methacrylic acid, whose concentration in the formulation does not exceed about 4% by weight. The reducing agent may be a sugar, e.g. sucrose, glycerine, ethylene glycol or a polyethylene glycol, citric acid or phosphorous acid. Optional components include acrylic acid monomer (which is polymerised when the coatings are cured), pigments, e.g. TiO 2 or phthalocyanine blue or green, and pigment dispersing agents, e.g. hydroxyethylcellulose or a polyethylene glycol. The formulations are suitable for coating metals such as plain carbon steels, and may be applied by dipping, spraying, roller coating or brush coating. Curing can be effected at 250‹-450‹F. The cured coatings are generally applied at a rate of 20-300 mg per sq. ft.
