Abstract

1,125,727. Injection moulding machines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 18 Oct., 1966 [12 Nov., 1965], No. 48132/65. Heading B5A. The nozzle of an injection moulding machine is provided with a closure member 31 (Fig. 5) one end 30 of which lies flush with the end of the nozzle orifice and forms part of the mould surface when the closure member is in closed position, but extends into the mould cavity in the open position. The closure member may be of stepped form as shown at (6) in Fig. 1 (not shown), but is preferably cone-shaped as seen in the remaining Figures. The opening and closing of the closure member may be effected mechanically but may be effected by the pressure of the moulding material. The invention is applied to the moulding of e.g. baths, domes, wall claddings or car body panels. Many examples of moulding materials are given. First main embodiment, (Fig. 5)-Material is forced by a ram (not shown) into a mould cavity 27 through passages 13, channels 14, orifices 16, a chamber 15, and the space between the closure member and its seating 22. The body 11 of the nozzle is of hardened steel, a nose portion 17 of a beryllium/ copper alloy, and a collar portion 21 of stainless steel. The nose 17 is spaced from a mould portion 19 by a heat-insulating ring 18, and a ring 20 formed on the nose 17. Cooling pipes 23 and an electric band heater 25 are provided. A fork-ended lever 40 engages in a groove 39 in the end 38 of a stem 33 of the closure member and enables the stem 33 to be manually or mechanically moved. The lever may be used to indicate movement of the stem. The end 30 of the closure member may be provided with a vent plug (43), Fig. 6 (not shown). Second main embodiment, (Fig. 7)-The nozzle operates in a similar way to' that in Fig. 5. The mould 48, 49 is formed partly by the end of the nozzle. Moulding material is forced from a channel 69 by a ram or screw plunger, through a sleeve valve 71 and into chamber 59 containing the stem of the closure member 63. The stem may carry spiral flutes or vanes 66 and may be prevented from rotating or freely rotatable or rotated by drive means (not shown). Alternatively, vanes may be fixed to the walls of the chamber 59. Movement of valve 71 to closed position assists in keeping the closure member closed. The limits of longitudinal movement of the closure member 63 may be adjustable by means of a worm 91 and a worm wheel 90 mounted on a screwthreaded cylinder 94.
